Project Title: Outdoor Learning Treasure Hunts with iBeacons

Abstract:
At Wadsworth Elementary, our goal is to provide students with memorable learning experiences. This project engages students in creativity, outdoor learning, and technology use. Our fifth and 6th grade students will have the opportunity to create school-wide treasure hunts that our K-6 students will explore. Using iBeacon technology, our students will be able to place “beacons” around the school and in our outdoor learning space. The beacons work together with a student-created app, allowing clues to appear on each student’s iPad when they are in the proximity of the small beacon. Our goal is to provide students with science standards that align with commonly missed questions on our state science assessments, helping our students learn in a memorable and fun way. During our STEM, Media, and Language Arts classes, students will design their apps and treasure hunts. The app template allows students to include Augmented Reality experiences, 360 videos, and other interactive content. We are asking for funds to purchase the iBeacons, app template software, and 360 cameras.

How is your project innovative?   (25 points)
This project is innovative through its use of cutting-edge technology that commercial companies are only beginning to explore. It incorporates so many content areas and standards, allowing students to engage in storytelling, graphic design, science, and technology. Through the use of iBeacons and 360 cameras, students will express their creativity and help younger students understand concepts, making this a truly innovative learning experience for our entire school.

How will it fit into your curriculum (include standards)? (10 points)
K-4th grade App Explorers Students will engage in a variety of science standards, mainly those where improvement is needed on quarterly and state assessments. 5th-6th Grade App Creators Students will create and publish a treasure hunt with a unique storyline, considering their audience while engaging in the writing process. LAFS.5.W.1.3, LAFS.6.W.1.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. LAFS.5.W.2.4, LAFS.6.W.2.4 Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. LAFS.5.W.2.6, LAFS.6.W.2.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of three pages in a single sitting. Students will engage in STEM and Technology Standards, working through the Engineering Process, taking 360 Photos, and incorporating multi-media content into their Treasure Hunt. SC.35.CS-CP.3.1 Write, communicate and publish activities using technology tools. SC.35.CS-CP.3.2 Present digitally created products, either individually and collaboratively, where a topic, concept, or skill is carefully analyzed or thoughtfully explored.

How will it encourage long-lasting change in your classroom, school or community? (20 points)
This project will encourage long-lasting change in our school, providing students with outdoor STEM learning opportunities for many years to come. The iBeacons can be used repeatedly for additional treasure hunts and even school tours that will help engage our community members and showcase the innovative use of technology in our schools. Additionally, this project encourages students to engage in the writing and engineering processes, teaching them about the importance of iteration and revision while creating projects. These skills will benefit our students during school, as well as in their future careers.

How will technology be utilized?  (20 points)
Technology is utilized throughout this project, providing students with opportunities to create graphic designs, take 360 photos, create and program their own apps, and utilize iPads to navigate through the treasure hunt. Students will program the iBeacons to correspond with various locations in our school, allowing clues to appear on iPads so that students can explore while learning about science concepts.

What evidence will you collect to show student gain?   (10 points)
Quarterly science assessment data, along with 5th grade state assessment scores will be analyzed to determine the amount of student gains achieved from this innovative project. We anticipate significant learning gains, due to the highly engaging content, as well as the encouragement of our 5th and 6th graders to become teachers and content experts as they create their own science treasure hunts and apps.

How will participants share your project results with the community?  (15 points)
We plan to invite School Board members and Community Partners to experience our student-created treasure hunts. Additionally, we will contact our local news and newspapers to publish information about our project, as well as share on our own social media websites. Our school is the host for EdCamp Flagler, and other small conferences, and we are excited to share these treasure hunts with all of our guests.
