Project Title: Notebooks for a digital age
Project Dates: January 20-May 2020 Grade Levels:

Focus Area(s) :Economic Graphing- Foundational Document Text Marking- Political Graphic Design - Data Interpretation

Abstract:
I am looking to purchase three iPads to help teach my American Government students how they can take information from one or two sites and turn it to support something they believe in and want to announce. Today's society is moving more and more to a digital age, but I have noticed my students still have not learned the skills to success in that digital world. The students are well verse in social media, but they do not understand how it influences people. They look at information in a book but they do not understand how to research where that information came from on the internet. The also need to learn critical thinking skills to project their own political beliefs.

Proposal:

How is your project innovative?   (25 points)
Students run a mock election in my class. They hold a caucus, decided rolls in their campaign, gain Super PAC money from administration and have to draw and record political advertisement. The students having iPads for their campaigns will allow the students to have their entire campaign on one device. Students are often told to watch the news or listen to elders, but do not create their own opinion. I want to teach students how to take political information (ads, graphs, documents, etc.) and formulate their own political campaign in class and eventual help political candidate. I want to teach students different apps on iPads to text mark and graphically design their own campaigns.

How will it fit into your curriculum (include standards)? (10 points)
Advance Placement students need to complete data analysis and analyze source material, I believe that the iPads will allow the students to manipulate these documents easier than a computer. Analyze the impact of citizen participation as a means of achieving political and social change. Students will use the iPads to look at political graphs from the past years and figure out the trends in voter turnout. Then the students can use the App Canva to create an infograph explaining the changes in voter turnout and why the change. Evaluate the processes and results of an election at the state or federal level. Students run a mock election and all the items they need to run the campaign can be housed on the iPad.

How will it encourage long-lasting change in your classroom, school or community? (20 points)
Students learn the importance of national elections and understand the work that goes into running a successful campaign. After completing the election campaign project I have had students tell me they want to work on a national campaign or have a new interest in politics. The student who might never had voted before, now cannot wait to vote and understand the candidates.

How will technology be utilized?  (20 points)
Students will use the iPad to analyze information throughout the semester and text mark that information. In April students will use their information to send out political flyers for their campaigns, create advertisements on canva, record political ads, email classmates for their votes, write speeches for the class debate, and run current polls in the class.

What evidence will you collect to show student gain?   (10 points)
Students take a citizen test at the start of the class and explain who they would vote for in the national election and why. Once the project students will take the same citizenship test and will write about who they would vote for in the national election and why. As a class we will review why the student's opinions changed.

How will participants share your project results with the community?  (15 points)
I will share my results on my two media outlets. Also, this year I would like to contact the local media to report to the community how the students have learned about their civic responsibility.
